ZaPalooza by Windmills & www.indieicons.com
This April, City Beautiful residents get to attend the launch of ZaPalooza —the super groovy fashion, arts & music festival for fashionistas, art buffs, music lovers, and foodies at Chandigarh’s hippest mall—Elante, The Courtyard.
Conceptualized & organized by Mumbai-based Windmills & Chandigarh-based IndieIcons Media (www.indieicons.com), Zapalooza, Chandigarh Edition is a quirky & fun, yet scaled-up version of pop-up bazaars.
Established to celebrate India’s bourgeoning creativity in the field of arts & design, ZaPalooza is a 2 day arts, music and fashion flee-cum-fest, with 40+ stalls selling off-beat lifestyle products, art & auto installations, curated workshops (shoe-stylizing by acclaimed fashion footwear designer Swatimodo, flair bartending, helmet painting & Selfie clicking and some flirty dancing to for girly fun) and music performances, with the cafes at Elante, The Courtyard, serving gourmet cuisine and ZaPalooza special menus. Sporting a funky décor, the fest would have vintage beauties by the Vintage and Classic Car Club of Chandigarh.
Behind this novel concept are two young, creative women—Inshaa Arora & Anandita Gupta. A chance meeting between partners & now best/inseparable buddies Inshaa & Anandita led to this collaboration & inspired Anandita to get Inshaa’s concept Zapalooza to Chandigarh region.
Inshaa, an engineer by profession & an artist by passion, has successfully done four editions of Zapalooza at Pune. A creative maverick at heart, she’s always on the lookout for artists doing off-beat stuff & showcases their work at ZaPalooza.
Anandita is an ex-features editor with India Today, Femina, HT, The Tribune, Magna, Kingfisher Explocity, who now runs her media venture www.indieicons.com, a quirky website that profiles & promotes young talent through curated events. She’s a media entrepreneur cum curator, who scoopes out niche & interesting, little-known brands and promotes them digitally (profiling them on www.indieicons.com) & physically (through events).
Anandita is on a constant look out for new and budding talent and fun ideas for hosting events which reflect on the immense creativity our country has. Like all flea market curators, Gupta scouts for upcomingdesigners &interesting brands on Facebook and fashion blogs and then runs them through an in-house screening process.
Both these young ladies belong to Chandigarh & feel the city needs to experience something like this! “While the flea market scene is scorching up everywhere, we found the lack of inspiring things to do in Chandigarh. There was no casual platform for amateur artists and small designers to showcase their work,” says Inshaa Arora, who plans to hold ZaPalooza, every few months.
“ZaPalooza is a platform for artists & designers doing fun, cutesy or out-of-the-box stuff. Or youngsters who may not have branded shops & may be selling through Facebook or websites,” chirps Anandita Gupta, CEO & Founder of www.indieicons.com, that has collaborated with Windmills, to bring Zapalooza to Chandigarh.
The duo has collaborated with acclaimed fashion footwear designer Swatimodo, who’ll not does conduct shoe-stylizing workshops and quirky shoefie contests at the event, but lend an out-of-the-box, funky touch to the whole setup décor!
Inshaa & Anandita’s fifty-member team of designers, Engineers, MBAs and artists — working full-time on this project — has grand visions for the layout of the open-air market including tents fashioned as colourful canopies, sit-outs furnished with throwaway tyres and mist fans and upturned umbrellas lining the roof of the pop-up exhibits.
“We are creating an artsy/funky central square, which branches out into different stalls for home décor, accessories, art and clothes, that sell merchandise according to price points,” explains Inshaa, adding that the goods will vary in price from Rs 200 to Rs 20,000.
“We encourage our shoppers to meet and talk with other designers about their work, enjoy the creative atmosphere and finally, take home some truly inspired creations. Besides, who doesn’t love a good bargain? And if there was a nice place you could go to where you got to indulge in just about everything from food and wine to groovy music while on the retail therapy, the place would be utopia for Chandigarh shopaholics,” laughs Anandita, who’s upbeat about getting ZaPalooza to Chandigarh.
From the truly useful to the totally frivolous, from the cutesy to the quirky, it will all come alive at ZaPalooza. For a city comprising many a creative folk, the spurt of this weekend bazaar called ZaPalooza doesn’t come as a surprise. Lined with stalls that are stocked with a wide range of apparel, bags, footwear, trinkets, jewellery and home accessories, food and live art, caricatures, pottery, flair bartending, tarot counters, Zapalooza is sure to enthral fashionistas, shopaholics, music buffs & foodies alike!!
