The outward expression of a beauty queen. The face of Max Factor Japan and Miss New Zealand 1970, Suzie Gennari established Togs Swimwear in 1994.
Suzie is the owner and designer of the brand which started in a small unit on Sydney’s north shore and is now based on Queensland’s Gold Coast. For the last few years the company has been making its global mark as a glamorous yet affordable quality swimsuit label.
A step back in time to where it all began. Coming from a fashion background and being trained in the beauty industry as a model and brand ambassador for many years, Suzie could see there was a gap in the swimwear industry. Noting that women of a slightly older demographic and/or plus size, wanted swimwear that is fashionable and flattering, she founded Togs.
A solo effort in designing all the garments herself plus contacting and cold calling prospective buyers, Suzie has grown her label into somewhat of an institution with loyal customers all over the world. In the early days, Suzie was selling to boutiques in and around Sydney. It was the day she hit her first one thousand dollar order was the day she knew Togs was going to settle in nicely to the marketplace.
How nicely it was to settle was unforseen. From its humble beginnings on the Sydney North Shore 20 years ago, the brand was first exported to the United States in 2009. Togs is now stocked in stores in New York, Miami Florida, London, Australia and New Zealand. This year’s Spring/Summer collection is now available at Australia’s leading department store David Jones. Now that is cause to celebrate!
Togs will celebrate 20 years and great success at the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival in October. The inspiration for the new collection for 2014/15 comes from Suzie melding the classic shapes of women’s swimwear with a blend of nature and glamour that flows into a series of designs that will turn even the most conservative of heads. All of the designs are overseen by Suzie herself as head designer and print developer and she continues to oversee manufacture every step of the process from beginning to end.
The company is now on the verge of opening its own retail website so customers can shop till they drop 24/7! Togs also has six of its own stand alone stores. The growth doesn’t stop there with a release of the labels first leisure wear and accessories range this Spring.
Togs Swimwear will showcase at the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival on October 25 at Palmer Coolum Resort.
